On Monday, the Tiskilwa Historical Society announced the dates for its annual Christmas Walk, set this year for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 5. The theme for this year’s event is “Catch the Spirit.” More than 30 village and rural businesses along Main and Owen streets will offer door prizes and surprises to those who stop by between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Dec. 5. Door prizes range from $25 gift certificates to a 16-pound turkey. The names of door prize winners will be drawn at 1:30 p.m. at the Tiskilwa Community Association building, located at Main and Sycamore streets. Rural businesses will set up shop at the fire station. In addition to the traditional walk to businesses, other activities include a visit with Santa, a soup-and-sandwich lunch, and free carriage rides, according to THS spokesperson Helen Kenney. As a special event, for the first time this year, the THS is inviting residents to “Catch the Spirit” by sharing its family nativity scene in a special display to be set up in St. Mary’s Rectory on Main Street, Kenney said. Since organizers need an idea of the sizes and number of nativity scenes, participants are asked to complete and return a registration form by Nov. 29 to the THS. Forms are available at each of Tiskilwa’s five churches, as well as at the Museum on Main and Bureau Valley Chief newspaper office. The soup and sandwich lunch will be served at St. Mary’s church hall, with all five community churches joining together to serve the meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Tiskilwa Ministerial Association for holiday food baskets and to the Bureau County Food Pantry, Kenney said. Santa will be available for photographs at the Tiskilwa Community Association building. Also, Tiskilwa walkers are invited to take a ride with Bob Harris in his horse-drawn carriage from 10 a.m. to noon. Thanks to THS’ Alpaca Day fundraiser as well as donations from society members, these rides will be free to the public, Kenney said. The 2009 Christmas Walk marks the fourth year the THS has organized a holiday event to thank the community for its support and to showcase town and country businesses, Kenney said. “With holiday lights decorating Main Street lamp posts and the gazebo in the East Park, there will be a festive spirit in the air,” Kenney said. “The historical society invites the community to Walk Tiskilwa, a chance to share the spirit of the season with friends and neighbors.” Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com.
