MANLIUS — Additional action was taken Tuesday evening as the village board of Manlius reconvened to finalize the steps needed to dismantle the tape and barricades currently blocking off the dilapidated buildings located at 113 and 115 Maple St.

The issue of safety with regards to these buildings is increasing as each day passes, due to the fact that no one is sure when they are going to collapse.

At the Nov. 3 board meeting, board member Trisha Johnson offered to look into Rent-a-Fence of Chicago to see what options are available to the village with regards to a more secure fence. Johnson reported to the board that Rent-A-Fence could put up a chain-link fence, 96 feet in diameter, to contain both buildings; making it secure enough that the elements of weather as well as the curious would have problems getting through.

Concerns regarding prices were brought up by many, due to the fact that no one is certain as to how long the fence would have to be up. The process of getting the buildings down safely has been a long drawn out issue with the board and the owners of the two properties, so cost was also a concern by the board.

Johnson said, “Rent-a-Fence charges a flat rate of $1,500 a year. So, if we need it for three months or 12 months, the price will be the same.”

Following a brief discussion, motions were made and passed to have Johnson notify Rent-A-Fence to come in and set up the structure as quickly as possible. The board is hopeful the fence will be up within the next week.

In other business, the board:

• Decided board member Jan Williams will work with the village maintenance supervisor Mike Rowland in getting bids and prices on a new or good used tractor loader. The village is in desperate need of one as soon as possible. They will report back at the Dec. 1 meeting.

• Donated $300 to the village Christmas committee for the first annual Village Christmas, scheduled for Dec. 12 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the village hall.
