SPRING VALLEY — Thomas J. Sobin, 83, of 327 W. First St., Spring Valley, died at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at IVCH in Peru. Born April 5, 1926, in Spring Valley to Frank and Ann (Foster) Sobin, he married Delores Palia May 22, 1948, in Immaculate Conception Church in Spring Valley. She survives. He worked as an ironworker and was a member of Ironworker Local 386 in LaSalle for 50 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member and past commander of both Spring Valley American Legion Post 182 and VFW Post 3666. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Spring Valley and was past secretary of the St. John Bosco Association. He was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus and member of the Loyal Order of Moose and past member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was founder of the Spring Valley Civil Defense and one of the original founders of the 10-33 Ambulance Service. He was a 50-year veteran of the Boy Scouts of America and served as scoutmaster for Troop 33 in Spring Valley. He served as a special policeman for the Spring Valley Youth Center and was a World War II Army veteran, serving in France, Germany and Austria with the 3rd Division, 7th Army. He was a 1944 graduate of Hall High School. Also surviving are two sons, Thomas (Donna) Sobin of Spring Valley, and Paul (Janine) Sobin of Spring Valley; two daughters, Deborah (Larry) Edwards of Buena Park, Calif., and Trina (Paul) Hamrick of Spring Valley; one sister, Betty Burkhart of Peru; 11 grandchildren, Leslie, Daniel, Scott, Cristy, Shari, Chelsie, Kayla, Emily, Chad, Jenna and Eric; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, two brothers, and two sisters. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Rev. Robert Spilman officiating. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Park in Spring Valley. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a Spring Valley Legion Service at 6 p.m. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Comments
