WALNUT — Joe Birkey of Birkey & Noble, Princeton, the village auditors, presented good news to the Walnut Village Board this week about its annual audit.

The village of Walnut’s current assessed value as of April 2009 is $15,996,537, an increase from last year.

“Our assessed value is based on the amount of land the city owns, other business and housing properties within the village limits. While we do have some debt with regards to the filter plant, an outdoor system that was put in four years ago, our village finances are in good shape,” Mayor Gary Brooks said.

The bond which was used to pay for the filter system is a 20-year bond which will be paid off in about 16 years.

“Walnut is doing very well financially. As a whole we are good. We have money put aside that we are hoping not to have to use this year; we are healthy,” Brooks said.

The village is not looking toward any large improvements over the next year.

“There are of course, the usual street repairs, but we will deal with those as they come. We have good equipment, as well as good people as employees and board members. Good people keep us looking good,” Brooks said.

In other business, the board:

• Heard Superintendent Gary Sarver explained to the board the rock filter located in the big polishing lagoon needs to be cleaned out. While this is not a necessity as of right now, it will need to be done next spring.

• Agreed to partner with the U.S. Census Bureau with regards to getting all residents on board with filling out their 2010 census survey. Surveys this year are only 10 questions and will be either mailed or hand-delivered to residents beginning January 2010.

• Approved the payment of bills in the amount of $14,210.57.
• Accepted the MFRT for the month of October in the amount of $2,461.57, as well as the IMRT for the month of August in the amount of $6,152.54.

• Was informed by Police Chief Tom Ptasnik that he will be attending a class in Princeton which deals with teenage suicide.
