Tigers ranked 4th

in preaseason poll

The preseason rankings have come in by Associated Press, and some area teams have received notice.

The Princeton boys, who return seven lettermen from last year’s Elite Eight, landed at No. 4 in 2A. Peoria Manual, who lost to Princeton in the sectional finals last year, had four five-place votes and Winnebago (four firsts), tied for first place with 89 points.

PHS coach Jesse Brandt said the preseason rankings really don’t mean anything at this time of the year and are “based solely on last year’s performance.”

He said Manual and ‘Bago are deserving of their top ranking and “we have a long ways to go to get to that level.”

Breese Central claimed third with 68 points and one first place vote. PHS tallied 55 points. The other first-place votes went to No. 5 Hales Franciscan (54) and No. 10 Seton Academy (26). Rock Falls (40) was rated No. 8, and IVC (5) was 19th

Annawan, which made its first state appearance in school history a year ago, was rated No. 1 in the 1A boys’ poll. The Annawan girls came in No. 4. Defending champ Hinckley-Big Rock grabbed the top spot for the 1A girls.

Also ranked No. 1 in the girls rankings are West Hancock (2A), Montini (3A) and Bolingbrook (4A).

Top-ranked boys’ teams include Champaign Centennial (3A) and Whitney Young (4A).
