SPRING VALLEY — James M. Coutts Sr., 85, of 836 W. Dakota St., Spring Valley, died at 8:29 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009.

Born March 10, 1924, in Ladd to William and Rebecca (McClellan) Coutts, he married Marie B. Desert Aug. 7, 1943, at Immaculate Conception Church in Spring Valley. She survives.

He was a bricklayer for more than 50 years, working out of Local 6 in Rockford. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was a 1942 graduate of Hall High School and attended Washington State University and Northern Illinois University.

He was a member of International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Immaculate Conception Church in Spring Valley, Holy Name Society of the church, Spring Valley American Legion and V.F.W., and Rice River Boys. He was a Red Coat volunteer at St. Margaret’s Hospital for 10 years. He had coached basketball at Immaculate Conception Grade School for five years, and coached in Spring Valley Little League, Senior Little League and American Legion Baseball for more than 20 years.

Also surviving are one daughter, Cindy (Thomas) Vallero of Spring Valley; one son, James M. (Diane) Coutts of Oregon, Ill.; one sister, Jeanette Ries of Alpharetta, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Becky Coutts of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, William J. Coutts.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, and at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Spring Valley, with the Rev. Robert Spilman officiating. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Park, Spring Valley.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with an American Legion Service at 6 p.m.

The Princeton High School Tigers beat the Rock Falls Rockets Wednesday 66-55 during sectional play at Byron. The Tigers will now play the undefeated Winnebago Indians at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship.
