Wyanet board discusses issues

By Kim Parker - news@bcrnews.com

WYANET — Questions regarding the renewal of liquor licenses at Wyanet taverns came under discussion at Tuesday’s meeting of the Wyanet Village Board.

Several board members voiced their concerns regarding the renewal of liquor licenses for local taverns, and whether approval of the village board is required.

After a lengthy discussion, the board decided to send letters to all local tavern owners, asking them to approach the board when it comes time for them to renew their licenses. The village board wants to meet with each tavern owner to address concerns, if any, before liquor license would be renewed.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the village board passed an amended sidewalk agreement, which will hopefully be clearer to the residents.

In part, the revised sidewalk agreement states all gravel, concrete and fiber mesh used to repair or replace existing sidewalks, or to establish new sidewalks within the village, as approved by the village, shall be the responsibility of the village.

Also, all labor, removal and disposal of old sidewalk and/or other materials formed from the repair and/or replacement of existing sidewalks, and/or the establishment of new public sidewalks, shall be the responsibility of the property owner.

The contractor which the property owner hires to repair and/or replace existing sidewalks, and/or establish new sidewalks, is to contact the Wyanet’s Village Supervisor to make prior arrangements for the delivery of gravel and cement. Saturday, Sunday and holiday delivery charges shall be borne by the property owner.

For additional information about the revised sidewalk agreement, contact city hall at (815) 699-2631.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Steve Fairbanks, owner of The Out House, addressed the board about a vacant building next to his tavern. Due to the disrepair of the neighboring building, bricks and other materials are falling and landing on his tavern, Fairbanks said.

Fairbanks has repaired his roof and sent a bill to the owner of the neighboring property, but has not received any communication back.

Fairbanks said he hoped the village board would have some ideas as to what his next step could be. He also asked if the village could do something about the neighboring building.

Village engineer Jack Kusek said there was a report made on the building a couple of years ago. Kusek said he would look up the report and send it to the board.

Mayor Bruce Hand told Fairbanks he (Hand) would look into the situation immediately and hoped to have answers for Fairbanks within the next couple of days. If not, Fairbanks could attend the January board meeting where the matter could be discussed further.

In other business, the village board:

• Approved payment of bills and payroll in the amount of $19,481.

• Reminded residents to keep their sidewalks cleared of snow.

• Gave Police Chief Todd Marquez permission to take the 2004 Chevy Impala police vehicle into Walt’s Garage, Buda, to have transmission fixed, at a cost of $2,428. Marquez will drive the 2002 Chevy Impala police vehicle until the 2004 is completed.
