Bureau Valley South takes BVEC title

Bureau Valley South defeated DePue 51-42 Saturday to capture first place in the Bureau Valley Elementary Conference boys’ basketball tournament in Ladd.

South came into the tournament as the third seed, but the addition of seventh-grader Jake Smith put them over the top. Smith had 24 points in the title game. Colby Wittig added 15 points. DePue made a great run in the tournament, knocking off top-seeded Bureau Valley North 33-28 in the semifinals. Coach Richard Zapf’s Spartans were led in the title game by Carlos Acosta (12 points) and Isaac Reyes (11). BV North settled for third place by defeating Bradford 47-34.Tyler Barnas had 27 points for North. Kody Church, Jacob Estrada and Bryan Arteberry each added six points.

Bradford was led by Ryan Young (11 points) and Colton Senders (10).

Varsity girls

Amboy 52, LaMoille/Ohio 25: The host Lady Clippers tamed the Lions Tuesday night in Amboy, jumping out to an 18-5 lead after the first quarter and cruising to a 52-25 win.

Lady Lions coach Bill Stouffer said that Lady Clippers talent and deep bench had the L/O co-op “just outmanned”.

Lady Lions senior guard Haley Stouffer led the co-op with 11 points, including a trio of treys. Mereli Feliciano added five points and eight rebounds. Courtney Olson led Amboy with 15 points on the evening.

Varsity boys

Annawan 57, Henry 53: The Braves hung on to edge past a scrappy Mallards squad that knocked down five fourth-quarter three-pointers to keep things, what Annawan coach Merritt Burns called, “a little too close for our comfort.”

Sean Walker led the way for Annawan with 18 points. Bryan Lybarger came up big for the Braves (5-3) in the second half, scoring 15 of his 17 tallies after intermission.
