PERU — St. Bede Chaplain Father Ronald Margherio, O.S.B., and chaperone Dave Margherio (a SBA alumnus from the class of 1973) recently accompanied 11 students on a very special trip.
For 11 years Fr. Ronald has been the pastor” at St. Bede Academy and for the past nine years has helped students come together to help others. Sister Cathy Bauer, O.S.B., of St. Walburg Monastery in Covington, Ky., and Tina Clare of St. Joseph’s parish in Crescent Springs, Ky., welcomed the helping hands these students would provide, as they guided them through a week of prayer, reflection and service opportunities with a program called Living Out Loud. The entire experience is designed to teach the students how to put others before themselves and combined St. Bede students with students from St. Joseph’s and other places in Kentucky.
Each day, the students prayed: May the Rule of St. Benedict be our guide, May the Spirit of St. Bede stay with us forever. The Rule of St. Benedict provides the foundation for the SBA all-school Masses and prayer services, retreats and mission trips, along with many other activities incorporated by Fr. Ronald. The students also ended the day in prayer and shared their day’s experiences with the group. They had many stories and were touched by those they served and got to know each day. The students were asked to reflect on three things they learned on the trip and name three individuals they met that inspired them, along with three action plans to continue to help others after returning home. St. Bede junior Gianna Elias said that after talking to her mother about the trip, they planned to start serving at their local food pantry once a month.
One of Fr. Ronald’s main objectives for this mission was to motivate the students to get to know the less fortunate as individuals and not just group them together as poor people.
“This trip was an opportunity to put faith into action and put a face to poverty,” said Fr. Ronald. “Students met the homeless, served those in need and experienced God in new ways. Our days were filled with working with children and the elderly; serving at soup kitchens in both Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky; providing cleaning, painting and yard work at social agencies; and visiting homeless shelters.”
