Letters
February 8, 2012 - 5:40 p.m.
The purpose of this letter is to bring to the attention of Bureau County citizens a method of investigation used by a Bureau County Sheriff’s Deputy to investigate a possible criminal felony act.

Home rule gives cities and villages wide and flexible powers in a number of ways, ranging from intergovernmental agreements to rental inspection regulations. Home rule, however, is most commonly used to generate revenue through its broad taxing powers. The primary focus of this letter is on the taxing powers available with home rule. A home rule municipality can constitutionally tax anything that is not income, occupations or earnings. With few exceptions, governing bodies of home rule units do not need to ask voters’ approval when instituting a tax.

On behalf of Princeton Residents for Self-Reliance, I am inviting you to attend an important town hall meeting. At this meeting, we will be sharing with you some of the financial issues facing our community and the potential options for solving them. As we move forward this year, Princeton will need to define the type of community we want to be and make some important decisions on the types and quality of services we want to provide our citizens. It is vitally important our residents understand the choices and actively participate in shaping our future.

If you have ever questioned whether or not our media is biased or using its power to inform us only with the information that they think we should know, think no more. They have done it again!
February 1, 2012 - 5:16 p.m.
Terri Simon’s editorial article in the Bureau County Republican newspaper on Jan. 29 quotes Monsignor Stanley Deptula saying, “ if some sacred articles were left behind, it was a complete oversight.”

I have been following letters of concerned people not in favor of changing the name of “the creek” that also runs through Cherry.
January 30, 2012 - 5:20 p.m.
Negro Creek has nothing to do with DePue; it is in Marquette.

When the country is going to hell, you would think that religion would be the stable force underpinning society. However, religious institutions are abandoning their own religious concepts that govern church laws and even their obligations to the people of the community.

Once again, the pendulum of political correctness has swung to the absurd under the banner of “Let's Rename Negro Creek.” I was not aware the word, negro, was racially insensitive, so maybe we should inform the families that have Negro as a surname that their last name is no longer convenient for us, and it must be changed. Then we should contact the countries where negro, is used in their language to describe the color black and inform them that this is no longer acceptable. But, let's not stop there. The issue of slavery has always been a black eye, excuse me, bruised eye, on our past, so perhaps our history should be re-written to exclude it and no one would have to feel uncomfortable. If we did that, then there would be no need to menti

Because I’ve had a longtime interest in black history, I attended the meeting Jan. 14 in Depue about changing the name of Negro Creek. That Philip Mol, who called the meeting, has heard people in the present refer to Negro Creek by a racial epithet is certainly a cause for concern. I am, however, not yet convinced that renaming Negro Creek will get us beyond that.

Now that election time is approaching for Princeton residents, the issue of Home Rule will be on the ballot. Do we vote for it or against it? To help you decide let's consider some red flags that have cropped up.
January 20, 2012 - 2:10 p.m.
Political correctness has gotten out of hand in this country. Changing the name of Negro Creek isn't a step forward for society. If anything, it's a step backward. People learn from the mistakes they made as well as the ones their ancestors made. Changing the name of a creek doesn't change the history behind the word. It was an acceptable term at the time, and it's part of our area's history.

Re: Hall Township’s “ordinance” regarding the spreading of sludge on nearby farm land.

Over 13 years ago, I became a caregiver when my then 19-year-old daughter, Jessica, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I was there when she went through the chemo that made her so sick she could not eat or drink, and when she lost all of her hair. And after four and one-half months, her chemo was finally done.

I would like to send a big THANK YOU to the two Princeton employees who stopped to help my mother on Monday morning, Jan. 9. She had left Central Bank and was crossing Main Street to go to the post office when she fell. I don’t know who the gentlemen were, but your help was greatly appreciated. They pulled up to her and turned on their flashing lights, so she would not be hit by traffic. Shortly after they stopped, a younger couple stopped, and then the Princeton ambulance arrived. Thank you to these people, too.
