A cold Friday morning greets sleepy-eyed shoppers, fresh off Thanksgiving dinner, joining the queue outside the local Walmart or department store in anticipation of the discounts and deals. Maybe it is the cold November morning or the competitive shopping spirit that possesses parents to fight over toys, but void from this scene is any consideration for others.
Recently, 18 cats were rescued from a property in Princeton where the owner of the property did not feel that it was their responsibility to sterilize these cats. Over the years, cat fights over territorial rights for food and mating were a constant occurrence. When many of the cats were showing signs of various diseases, it was decided that something had to be done to help these animals. As each was brought in to be tested and treated, it became apparent that help had come too late. In addition to various diseases all but five had FELV (leukemia) and FIV (Aids).

The “unique” space up for sale that opened up in LaSalle — St. Roch’s Church — is not going to be as unique as it is today because shortly there are going to be three or four more unique spaces that will be for sale.
This comment is directed specifically to Mr. Raccuglia.

This last weekend I was reminded of what makes this country great – the people! Over the weekend, Congresswoman Halvorson showed that she cares more about people than politics when she voted to pass health care reform. In this recession, people have lost not only their jobs, but their insurance and their security. Many of us who do have jobs live in fear of losing it.  In a country as great as ours, we should not be forced to live in fear of getting sick, and a pre-existing condition should not be a death sentence.

I have to admit I have no inside track or information on the Bureau Valley Board investigation on the rumors flying around the community. I do believe the board when they say the investigation does not involve students or their safety. OK, we elected them; let them do their job. I should add, let them do their job that they don’t get paid for. The BV Board investigation is not at the top of my worries for BV or any school district for that matter. The main question for all schools should be, “How are the students?” At this time, the state of Illinois is telling the school districts to expect half of their state aid money next year. As a taxpayer, how is your school district going to make this up? With that anticipation of state funding bein

Elm Lawn Memorial Cemetery, from junior high through all ages, is a good place to visit history on Veterans Day or Memorial Day or any time that is comfortable. Take Warren Street (the street just south of the Pizza Hut) four blocks west off of Main Street.
What is the dirty little secret that the Bureau Valley School Board is keeping so hush-hush from the taxpayers of the school district? It has been stated that it involves an employee of the district ... Is the district hiding from the rumors from a year ago involving a former employee of the district, or is the district getting ready to be slapped with a civil lawsuit that is going to cost the district and the taxpayers for lawyers and settlement costs?

In my family there is a hard-working, taxpaying, active-church-member, give-back-to-the-community couple who are true saints. They have suffered expense, inconvenience, heartache and even danger caring for distantly related children with intolerable home situations. They have worked all their lives at low-paying jobs, usually without health insurance.
I was recently laid off from my job at a local factory. I was getting up in age when I was hired there. I was 49 when I started, and I was told there had never been a lay-off at this factory ever before. I thought if I did my best for the company, I could end up retiring from there. Boy was I wrong. I was devastated when I was given a letter saying the job I did most didn’t need to be ran.
This letter is in response to Stan White’s letter titled, “Citizens seem not to care.” Mr. White makes several points based on half-truths and a misrepresentation of the facts regarding current polices that he disagrees with.

I’m asking Ohio citizens if they know anyone who tampered with my mail. The papers were sent out by the Committee of 10 from Ohio. The papers were stapled. After the mail was put in my box, someone opened my box and opened my health papers from Rockford Clinic and put them in that envelope. The seal had to be steamed open and re-glued the envelope closed. I’ve turned it over to a government investigator.
Your recent articles entitled, “County to take legal action” (Oct. 14) and “Details released on road dispute” (Oct. 16) omitted a few pertinent details. On Sept. 18, Iberdrola Renewables, on behalf of the Providence Heights Wind, LLC (Providence Heights), was compelled to file a lawsuit against Bureau County over the county’s decision to breach the agreement which governs road repair. Among other things, the county refused to allow road repairs on Wyanet-Walnut and Kentville Roads. The decision to sue was made with great regret, but efforts to settle the dispute amicably, both before and after the lawsuit, were unsuccessful. We are disappointed that resources that could be used to fix the roads will instead be used to litigate the matter.
Yes, Devin (Vaughn), you are right.

If you feel the items below are the way to govern the United States of America, then you will very happy when the USA becomes a “third world country,” run by the U.S. government for everything in your life! An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by a partner every year. Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults. Thirty to 60 percent of perpetrators of domestic violence also abuse children in the household.
