Whether it’s local flooding or a nationwide pandemic, the Bureau County Health Department is committed to the health and welfare of its citizens.
The bureau’s credo, “Our goal is to protect the families of our county before, during, and after any public health emergency,” takes many forms, in many different scenarios, including;
- Tornadoes and Floods
- Disease Outbreaks
- Hazardous Material Spills or Releases
- Nuclear accidents or attacks
- Bioterrorist Events
- Pandemic Influenza
The bureau’s action plans coordinate efforts with healthcare providers, hospitals, EMS, emergency responders, and law enforcement to prepare for the unexpected. All organizations train together during disaster drills and discuss strategies at situational table top exercises.
The Medical Reserve Corps units are community-based and function as a way to locally organize and utilize volunteers - medical professionals and others - who want to donate their time and expertise to promote healthy living and help build the public health infrastructure.
The Bureau County Health Department is also part of an 8-county Public Health Bioterrorism preparedness Region. The Illinois Department of Public Health has employed an Emergency Response Coordinator for this Region to assist in planning. If an attack should occur, the health department and other federal, state, and local emergency responder agencies have plans in place to minimize the risk and treat those who may become ill.
The department also has detailed action plans outlining procedures to requisition, receive, and dispense medications to county citizens by way of the Strategic National Stockpile, and has sites for mass prophylaxis and agreements with local partners to aid in dispensing.
The bureau has more information on emergency preparedness for families and pets (including how to build a family disaster supply kit), severe weather, volunteering and more, on its website at www.bchealthdepartment.org.
