Screening tests are an important part of staying healthy. They can catch health conditions and diseases early so they can be treated, in many cases before they become life threatening or irreversible.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, depending on your age, sex, and medical history, you may need to be screened for things like certain types of cancer, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, osteoporosis (weak bones), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and more.
If your physician orders a health screening, chances are the Bureau County Health Department can do it, and for a lot less. Very low cost laboratory services for most blood tests are offered every week. An order from your medical provider is required and results are usually available within a few days. Those wanting health screening tests should call ahead for an appointment.
“Our screenings are very affordable,” said Health Department Director of Nursing Laurie Geuther. “We don’t bill insurance, but they can submit it to their insurance, We had one man whose lab tests were going to cost him $1,000 and they were $160 here. There’s a significant cost savings and it’s available to anyone.”
There are 25 screenings available through the health department. A full list, including the cost of each test, can be viewed on the department’s website at www.bchealthdepartment.org. In addition to the cost of each test, there is a $10 fee for lab draws per visit, regardless of the number of tests done at that visit.
“If they come in for five tests, it’s $10. If they come in for one test it’s $10,” Geuther said.
Screenings are available at the Bureau and Putnam counties offices in Princeton and Hennepin To make an appointment call Bureau County at 815-872-5091 or Putnam County at 815-925-7326
