AMBOY — Saturday’s playoff contest between co-op programs Amboy/LaMoille and Annawan/Wethersfield features two 9-1 squads with a new home in class 2A.
1A boys’ team outlook: Top-ranked Beecher won the Decatur sectional with just one senior and two freshmen in its lineup and is a heavy favorite. Elmwood/Brimfield won its own sectional and returns five runners from last year’s 1A state title squad. No. 2 ranked Sterling Newman and 2008 runner-up Westmont placed 1-2 at the Aurora sectional. Bureau Valley returns five runners from last year’s sixth-place squad, which finished five points out of fifth, including sophomore Derrick Johnson (47th), juniors Nate DeVenney (54th) and Ryan Johnson (74th) and seniors Ryan Johnson (99th) and Cody Taylor (138th).
Sean Walker A/W QB: Walker may have earned the nickname “Slash,” as he has lined up at quarterback, running back and wide receiver for the Titans this season. Accounting for 14 touchdowns on the year, Walker has the ability to break a big play any time he touches the ball.
We managed to get J.D. Orwig on board as this week’s guest picker after his gut-wrenching moments in the WZOE broadcast booth calling the shots in Saturday’s Storm playoff loss. The rook Yucus fell back to earth after his 10-0 in Week 9.

It’s certainly been a match of two strong football programs when Annawan joined forces with neighbor Kewanee Wethersfield a year ago.

J.A. Happ/World Series update: The World Series resumes Saturday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia all tied up at 1-1 after the Yankees’ 3-1 win Thursday. Phils’ manager Charlie Manuel has tabbed Joe Blanton as the Game 3 starter, leaving former St. Bede Bruin J.A. Happ in the bullpen to match up against the Yankees’ left-handed hitters. “I think Blanton fits for us because I think we want to keep Happ right now in the bullpen, especially kind of in the middle where he could do some innings,” Manuel said. Neither Happ or LaSalle native Chad Durbin have pitched in the first two Series games for the Phillies, the defending champs.

Rainfall, high waters wreak havoc on duck hunting

November brings to the sportsman some extra options to get out to hunt for some additional species. Some hunters have already harvested some ducks and geese, deer (archery) and turkey (shotgun) and may now continue via archery, except during deer shotgun season Nov. 20-22 and Dec. 3-6.
