Bruins, Panthers march on
Three Bureau County athletes brought home state medals from IHSA State Track and Field competition Saturday in Charleston.
CHARLESTON — Lindsey Hoffert has jumped herself back into contention for another medal in the IHSA State Track and Field competition.
OREGON — The Princeton Tigers baseball season came to an end mainly due to one very freakish half inning. A key error, a crazy bounce and unexpected thunder helped the Oregon Hawks break what was shaping up to be a classic pitchers’ duel and blow the game open on the way to a 6-1 regional victory.
PERU — Princeton pitcher Madison Menzel wrangled her way out of trouble in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, keeping Princeton in contention of Wednesday’s Class 2A regional semifinal vs. Mendota at St. Bede. Even Houdini could only escape his traps so many times.
The St. Bede Bruins rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat Seneca 7-6 in 10 innings in regional baseball semifinal play Wednesday at Ottawa Marquette.

Earlville-Leland 14, LaMoille-Ohio 8: The Lions led 8-3 after three innings, but the Red Raiders (4-14) rallied by scoring 11 runs to advance Monday in the Putnam County Class 1A Regional.
Princeton placed second at the varsity level and first in the F/S level in the final NCIC boys track and field at Rathje Track last week.
PERU — When the basketball season was over this year at St. Bede Academy, Lady Bruins standout Mo Dean had enough of the game, telling the BCR she was going to go to college and just be a student. Turns out, she wasn’t ready to walk away from the game after all.
OTTAWA — Hall’s baseball squad traveled to Ottawa to face Ottawa-Marquette in regional play Thursday evening. The bats were quiet for the first three innings and unfortunately for the Red Devils when hits started coming in they were off the opposing bats.

MANLIUS – The Bureau Valley Storm rallied late once this season to beat the Mendota Trojans. It occurred in the first game of an April 27 double-header on the very same baseball field.
If the seeds hold up, Bureau County athletes are in line for some more state medals in this weekend’s IHSA State Track and Field Meet in Charleston.
PERU — After a tense first inning Tuesday night, the Lady Bruins’ bats woke up delivering them a 7-1 win against Somonauk in the first round of the St. Bede 2A softball regional.

Most of the area track and field boys teams will assemble in Manlius for the Bureau Valley 1A Sectional meet. Amboy/LaMoille will compete at Oregon and Princeton will run in 2A at Plano.

MOLINE — The Princeton Tigresses’ soccer season came to an end as they suffered a crushing 8-1 loss to the Rock Island Alleman Pioneers Friday night in the Class 1A regional final rematch from last year.
The Princeton Tigresses rolled to the championship of the IVC Softball Tournament Friday evening, defeating the host Grey Ghosts 5-2 and Peoria Christian 10-0.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Toronto Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ sustained what appeared to be a horrific injury, being struck on the side of the head by a line drive pitching Tuesday night against the Tampa Rays. The first thing he wanted to do while being taken by ambulance to the hospital was call his mom, Sue Happ of Peru and let her know he was OK.
PRINCETON — Zoe Mead crossed the finish line after qualifying for state in the 800 meters with a second place finish at the Princeton Sectional and hugged her brother, Lenny, a PHS freshman, who was standing nearby.
PRINCETON — The Princeton Tigresses had plans to end Thursday’s Senior Night contest on a rainy day against Midland by the 10-run rule in five innings. Midland had other ideas.

The 40th and final NCIC girls’ track and field championships came down to a dual meet in Chillicothe Monday where Princeton defeated host IVC 73-65.
St. Bede 13, IVC 8: Winning pitcher Emmi Christensen helped herself with a two-run homer and two sacrifice flies as the Lady Bruins rolled in NCIC play Monday. Lydia Stariha went 2-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Barbi Prokup had two RBIs and Abby Nowakowski went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Princeton 3, Streator 2: Zach Hicks (4-6, 6-3, 10-4) and Elliott Beetz (1-6,7-6, 10-7) handled the singles play and Brady Frank and Ian Nichols teamed up for a 6-1 6-7, 10-6 win at No. 1 doubles as the Tigers edged the Bulldogs Tuesday.
PERU — The St. Bede Bruins managed to rally back and beat the Princeton Tigers Monday afternoon 9-8 in eight innings.
Princeton opened its regional title defense by defeating Spring Valley Hall 8-0 in semifinal play of the Alleman 1A regional Tuesday evening in Rock Island.
The Hall Red Devils clinched the Tri-County Conference baseball championship for 2013, defeating Midland 6-0 Monday to finish 7-0 in league play.

Bureau Valley South qualified 20 athletes for this week’s IESA 1A State Track and Field finals in East Peoria and claimed two sectional championships at Kewanee Wethersfield Saturday.
