James 'Jim' McFadden

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — James Henry “Jim” McFadden, 64, of Battle Creek, Mich., died Sunday afternoon, March 17, 2019, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich., following a lengthy illness.

Jim, the son of Henry E. McFadden and Laurene (Kehlenbach) Evans, was born in Gothenburg, Neb., on May 30, 1954, and moved to Battle Creek, Mich., in 2008 to pursue raising championship Golden Retrievers. He retired in 2002 from security for United Air Lines at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. In the 1980s and early '90s, he trained and raced harness horses. Prior to working with horses, he worked for the Bureau County Highway Department, and refereed baseball and basketball in Princeton, where he also graduated from high school. Jim was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

Jim is survived by his son, Kyle R. McFadden of Thailand; his mother; his sister-in-law, Phyllis McFadden, and her two sons, Ryan and Kevin McFadden; and his aunt, Jean (Jack) Sabas, and their three children, Michelle, Michael and Susan.

Jim was preceded in death by his father; his brother, Frank McFadden; and his grandparents.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Jim’s life will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care in Battle Creek, Mich.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim’s honor may be directed to local animal shelters or St. Philip Roman Catholic Church in Battle Creek, Mich.
