Addressing the arguments in favor of marijuana sales

I attended the Sept. 3 Princeton City Council meeting where a discussion was held concerning legalizing the sale of marijuana in our city. I was shocked to hear our mayor and some council members support this business coming into Princeton. Common sense and evidence tell us this would have a negative impact.

I would like to address some arguments made in support of this action.

It is legal. Just because some knuckleheads in Springfield think it’s a good idea doesn’t mean we have to act like lemmings.

The city needs the money. So we are willing to engage in any activity, no matter how harmful, as long as we can make money?

The mayor stated he cannot allow his experience or personal opinions to influence his actions. What!? If our leaders do not make choices based on morals and ethics, but winds of public opinion, we are all going to end up in a ditch.

The question was posed, we make choices based on whose morals? Glad you asked. Certainly not mine or yours. There is one judge and lawmaker. We will all stand before him and give account for how we lived this life. He is the God who created all of us and gave us life. The God who loves us and gave us commandments to live by. Not because he wanted to deny us fun or pleasure, but because he wants his children to be well and prosper. His will for us is to experience peace, fulfillment and joy.

It was stated that making drug use legal will make it safer. This lacks rationality, to say the least. Making any destructive behavior legal is not going to make it safer.

It is not a gateway drug. It is common knowledge among professionals in the field that it certainly is.

Recreational use and medicinal use are one and the same. Please don’t insult us with this patently false argument.

It is widespread and inevitable. This will be true only if wiser and saner minds roll over and play dead. Princeton, please do not give up!

One last point I would like to emphasize. We are employing law enforcement officers to engage in the dangerous effort to impede and hopefully eradicate drug trafficking in our area.

From arrest records, it is evident it is a thriving business here already. Are we going to hamper the efforts of these brave civil servants by allowing a drug sales business to be legalized here? I can only imagine the impact on their morale.
