PRINCETON — The 11th annual Christkindl Markt (Christ Child Market) will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Open Prairie United Church of Christ, 25 E. Marion St. in Princeton (behind the Apollo Theater). Christkindl Markt is a popular feature of the Princeton Main Street Christmas Walk.
At the market entrance, coffee, hot chocolate, hot mulled cider, stollen, strudel, lebkuchen and homemade soft pretzels will be served all day. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a German Brathaus will serve lunch offering brats, franks, sauerkraut, potato salad, and homemade potato, cabbage and chicken noodle soups, along with mac and cheese for kids.
An International Cookie Bazaar is a highlight of Christkindl Markt. Shoppers will be able to select from 25 different kinds of cookies representing 20 countries. The arts and crafts part of the market this year includes ceramics, paintings, picture frames, jewelry, leather goods, knits and doll clothes.
Fair trade coffees and chocolates and frozen homemade entrees (breakfast casseroles, lasagnas) that are helpful to have on hand for the holidays will be available for purchase as well. New this year will be the Open Prairie Sweet Shop, featuring chocolate peanut butter buckeyes, turtles and chocolate mice.
Children are invited to decorate and take home their very own gingerbread house, the market’s free children’s activity.
Father Christmas will be there and so will the Princeton High School German Club selling German Advent calendars. The market is accessible to all, and free parking is available directly across the street. For more information, call Open Prairie UCC at 815-872-5150.
Admission is free.
