Lions explode to victory in second half

Boys basketball: LaMoille-Ohio 73, Ashton-Franklin Center 48

LAMOILLE — Trailing by a single point, 24-23, at the half, the LaMoille-Ohio Lions netted a whopping 50 second half points, en route to posting a 73-48 rout over the visiting Ashton-Franklin Center Raiders Tuesday night at Dean Madsen Gymnasium in boys varsity basketball action.

L-O scored 20 points in the third quarter, then another 30 in the fourth period, compared to AFC’s 24 total points in the second half.

The Raiders got as close as five points away from the Lions, 51-46, with 5:25 left in the game before L-O ended the game on a 22-2 offensive run to easily pull away.

The Lions converted 19 of 25 free throws on the night, including a stellar 17 of 19 in the fourth period, as AFC was forced to continue to foul the hosts, while the Raiders made good on just 3 of 19 shots from the floor over the game’s last eight minutes.

Carter Cherry led the Lions (17-8) with 18 points, while his twin brother, Casen, finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds, as L/O commanded the glass, out-rebounding AFC, 45-19.

Max Ryjov added 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench, and Corey Pinter netted 11 tallies for the winners.

Brett Buhrow and Dan Hoffman split 22 points to pace the Raiders (5-21).

L-O had previously beaten the Raiders, 52-39, back in November at the AFC Thanksgiving Tournament.

The younger Lions claimed the prelim game as well, 47-40, over AFC. Having trailed by as many as 13 points twice, L-O used an 18-2 third quarter advantage to turn the game around.
