Bruins, Red Devils, Lions fall in regional play

Wednesday night regional update

The season came to a close for all three Bureau County boys basketball seasons playing in regional play Wednesday night.

At Granville (1A): The St. Bede Bruins fell to Gardner-South Wilmington 57-45 in semifinal play at Putnam County High School. Paul Hart led the Bruins (13-21) with 20 points and Luke Story added 14.

The first semifinal of the night saw Yorkville Christian knock out host PC 74-42.

Yorkville and GSW will meet in Friday's finals.

At Polo (1A): LaMoille-Ohio went down in defeat 84-44 to Pecatonica in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

The Lions bow out at 18-13.

At Winnebago (2A): The Red Devils made the long trek only to fall to El Paso-Gridley 74-55.

Hall finishes with a 19-14 record.

In other regional action

Orion beat Monmouth-Roseville 73, 60

At Rock Falls (2A): The host Rockets beat Knoxville 62-55 while Newman downed Erie-Prophetstown 62-27 in Wednesday's quarterfinals. The Rockets and Comets will meet for Friday's championship.

At Chillicothe (2A): Fieldcrest knocked out the host Grey Ghosts 63-51 Wednesday night.

The Knights (24-6) advance to Friday's finals against Princeton (16-14), which upset No. 5 state ranked Kewanee 60-56 Tuesday night. Those teams last met for the regional finals in 2011 in Spring Valley, where the Tigers beat the Knights 42-40 on Michael Murray's last-second, fullcourt layup.
