Each year, Illinois gives anglers an early-season fishing opportunity by stocking trout in 56 ponds, lakes, streams and canals statewide.
However, opening day was postponed at many of those bodies of water, as sites run by Illinois Department of Natural Resources all are closed as a precaution to prevent people from gathering and spreading the coronavirus.
That means the trout season will not open Saturday, or at the Illinois and Michigan Canal at LaSalle, the Hennepin Canal Parkway lagoon near Sheffield and Silver Springs State Park, Yorkville.
Mendota officials closed Lake Mendota, too, because Mayor David Boelk and Police Chief Greg Kellen did not want to see a big crowd of families and groups of fishermen showing up in town.
