The one event I will miss more than anything is Gavers Barndance, for a lot of reasons that go beyond a bottomless cup. Over the past few years, it’s been one of the few times that my wife and I have gotten out of the house to have fun. But it’s also a great cause as someone who, like so many, has lost close loved ones to cancer. When I was 21, I lost my best friend to leukemia and, three years ago, I lost my mom to cancer.
When I was in college, I organized a benefit concert to raise money for the leukemia/lymphoma society. It was a pain and it didn’t raise much, so it gives me a ton of appreciation for what Steve Gavers and the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation have been able to build. That night each year is simply meaningful in a lot of ways.
